Giving Up Free Will Is Another Kind of Free Will

Chengdu, China : 2023

A 12-hour durational performance in Chengdu

12 hours

24-25 September 2023

I cycled at dusk from the city centre and deliberately abandoned a destination.

I delegated decision-making to the “god” of traffic lights: each signal became a random command that determined my next move.

The action lasted until sunrise, producing a traced route and an action map.

The work treats urban infrastructure as a score that redistributes agency—testing how constraint, chance, and repetition reshape attention, responsibility, and the experience of freedom.
